Female activists and their powerful message is actual, enthralling and very fascinating. Here a celebration in contemporary jazz.

by Tineke Postma, Sun-Mi Hong, Frans van der Hoeven and Mark Lotz

Pictures september 2020 (premiere)

Manal al-Sharif

Sojourner’s Truth is named after Isabella ‘Belle’ Baumfree, an abolitionist and female activist, famous for her ‘Ain’t I A Woman’ speech of 1851.

In the age of populism, #blacklivesmatters, social unrest and Sars-2, society has a great need for personal involvement. Contemporary jazz does not usually delve into current political or social issues. “Sojourner’s Truth” does. So we bring jazz back to its powerful origins rooted in resistance and protest.

’If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem’

Within the performance the essence of the female activist is central. The music reflects the emotional content of the activist and transport it into the ‘now’.

Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai

The female activists all fought/fight for a different cause: from the fight against slavery to the right to vote for women, from the right for a woman to be allowed to drive a car, to the right to receive the same education as men as well as women who fight for their sexual freedom. For the right to ‘be yourself’, regardless of gender, origin, age, race or color.

The lives of these activists cover a period of time from the 19th to the 21st century with a variety of nationalities and backgrounds. This is an extremely fascinating and inspiring play ground for this project.
